One of the most significant choices we make time and again is how we spend our time.
More specifically, spending what we call our Recreational Time: the non school, non working, non sleeping, non eating time. Yes, I know some people think eating is a recreational activity, but for now let’s set eating aside.
Are all recreational activities created the same? Let’s name and categorize them.
Let’s think of them as Gold choices, Silver choices and Sh@t. Gold improves you, Silver helps you pass the time, and Sh@t is well, sh@t.

Gold: These experiences are

    Challenging and you actually learn something about yourself or others (like this book!).
    Emotionally developing.
    Energizing and gives you more than it takes away from you.
    Feels like you’re doing the correct thing.
    Makes you happy.
    Builds confidence and self-esteem.

Silver: These experiences are

    The choices we make when we don’t want to make a choice.
    Intellectually and emotionally easy or simple. It’s comfortable.
    Passive, rather than active.
    Easily over-done. Think of sitting on the couch, staring at the TV screen. A little bit of it is OK but too much might leave you with the feeling that you’ve wasted your time.

Sh@t: These experiences are

    Physically or mentally damaging, either short-term or long-term, to you or others.
    Harmful to you intellectually, emotionally, and or physically. Over time, when you engage in Shit, you become less capable of peak performance in all areas of your life.
    Exhausting! The next moment you’ll feel horrible or tired, “I’m never doing that again!”

SECRET: I’ve met very successful, happy people who occasionally engage in Shit. But only OCCASIONALLY. You think they do it ALL the time? Hell No! When they look at their lives, at the Big Picture, their Sh@t is only a small portion of their experiences.

Make a list of Gold, Silver and Sh@t choices in one color pen or pencil. With another color, list the choices that you can or want to make next time you have the opportunity.

Gold + Average hours spent per week
Silver + Average hours spent per week
Sh@t + Average hours spent per week

I’ve noticed that when we’re at our best and feeling confident and full of energy and our self esteem is in a good place, we choose the GOLD choices. If someone were to ask, “How are you feeling?” and your answer is, “So so,” you’d likely make a Silver choice. When self doubt creeps in and we’re feeling pretty crummy about ourselves, we are susceptible to Sh@t; We often pick Sh@t because we are feeling weak or depressed, and in a self destructive mode. When we regain our strength, our choices tend to move up to Silver and Gold automatically and easily.
