Chinese vs Western healing styles
« on: May 21, 2014, 03:58:42 AM »
I heard a lot people claim that for quickest results, please apply western healing methods a.k.a. doctor. But for gentle impact for our body, TCM is the better choice. Do you agree with this?

Why TCM is slow to get the intended result? Any modernization attempts at TCM? And why western healing methods always harsh on our body? Any attempts to lessen the impact for its patients?

Hi George :)

''Modern Medicine'' and ''Traditional Medicine'' are two completely different branches, many times with completely different goals. One of the first things you notice as you study them both, is that the modern medicine is mostly concerned with the curative aspect of healing, while the traditional medicine has a holistic note to it, and is based on prevention, seeing curative treatments only as the last resort, to be used when the healer has in fact already failed in his primary goal, which is to keep people healthy (not to heal the sick).

The ancient cultures had family doctors, who were personally involved in the lives of the family, serving them for many generations, advising on the life-style in general as well as helping to withstand the hard times. I have heard that in ancient china, the healers were getting paid only when the customers were healthy! Imagine that! Paying your doctor when you are healthy, and when you are not, you visit him and he helps you get better for free (as he failed to do his work).

Perhaps you've heard that ''Western Medicine'' is not really western, but common to all cultures and nations worldwide. It is the exact same medicine everyone would use in the midst of a large battle or war, where you do not have time and resources to attend to the sick fully. You do all you can, and move on to the next patient. Since the patients keep coming and coming, you use drugs (or other methods) to at least help them from feeling pain. Holistic healing cannot be practiced within short time limits - in other words, it needs to happen all the time, by itself, and the practitioner is there only to advise, not to heal.

Lastly (making all of what I said above kinda redundant), TCM is not a part of holistic healing methods. It is interesting to note the transformations Chinese Medicine went through at the times of Mao and the Communist China. To simplify; they wanted to modernize the whole country and were throwing their own masters out (that is one of the reasons why there are so many masters of CM masters abroad). But there werent enough chineese trained in ''western medicine'' at the time and the population was gradually becoming less and less healthy. The leaders noted that they need to reach a sort of compromise, and TCM was invented, borrowing the skill of the traditional healers but giving it a new, westernized, scientifically proven, uniform. A great many things were abandoned in this transformation, and there are some of us that say, that the main magic has been lost.

In the context of this post, the main magic is exactly that, seeing the slow, long term, but lasting techniques of ''Traditional Medicine'' as much more important, than the quick-fix, thank-you-come-again methods of the ''Western Medicine''.

Health, by the definition of World health Organization:
''Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.''

Hope it helped :)
d.

traditional western is more emergency type and eastern is for lifestyle prevention of illness. That's what is meant by quick results, seeing progress quickly. western focus on physical body while eastern treats the whole. Then there is western holistic approach which follows similar principles of eastern.
