Well... I Ching suggests using the text(classic+change). Can we use the text and assign the branches and stems... Sure, Jack Chiu is using the text in every example in his book, yet he is very much assigning branches and stems.

I usually check the text either for advice(so details in the event doesn't matter as much), or when there is one changing line only as an addition.
In practice Liu Yao/WWG will usually provide all that we may need to know, so most practitioners I'm aware of doesn't use translation. Yet the translation sometimes has point of view and details that are more philosophical in nature and some questions can benefit from that, in my view.

Overall - up to the practitioners, all possible ways of doing that exists I'm sure.
