  • Greetings everyone,

I have been studying the Mei Hua method of divination for the past few months. I have a question about which calendar to use. The classical sources say to use the Chinese lunar one, but they do not say what to do when there is a difference in the month or year branch.

For example. The Chinese practitioner Wang Yang in his English book The Authentic I Ching says to use the lunar calendar, but then he says that the year starts according to the solar calendar.

Moreover, he then introduces another twist. For example, on page 103, for the date 1995, January 1, 10 am, he would use the Bing Zi/Yang Fire Rat month branch according to the solar calendar, but he would write the Rat as number 12 in the chart, because the Ding Chou/Yin Fire Ox month starts on January 1. So he writes the day as 1/1st because the Ten thousand year calendar shows that it is the 1st day of the 12th lunar month and yet he uses 11th branch, the Rat within the BaZi chart for the date.

In essence, author Yang Wang is using a mixed calendar, not the lunar one. Is this the traditional practice in Mei Hua in regards to calendar?

To make it even confusing, now we are in what I call the yearly grey area, that is, in the period where the Xin Chou year started 2 days ago according to the solar calendar, but we are still in the year of Geng Zi according to the lunar one. And the Chinese people celebrate the New Year according to the lunar calendar, not solar one.

And so it happened today that I was asked a serious question. Because of this, I dared not use rice or some other method to draw a hexagram independent of date and time, as I wanted a more "objective" method. So I used the date and time method. Having said, even if one proposed not to use the date and time method in such cases, one would still have to account for the energy of the season and day, and it would differ in such cases as well.

As this is my first post on this forum, I am not sure how to insert the charts, so I have attached them.

Data: 2021, February 5, day 24 according to the lunar calendar, Horse hour.

If someone has experience with this issue, or knowledge based on other sources (preferably traditional), I would appreciate if they share it.

    Just use the Solar... Consistently.
If you haven't used anything consistently, then don't ask very serious questions yet. Give it time until you are stable then do.

I have been using the solar and mixed calendar consistently for years, but that is above all for BaZi and somewhat for He Luo Li Shu, although the latter needs more research.

Thanks for the reply gmuli, but using the solar calendar is completely out of the question for me, not when the sources say to use the lunar. Why would I innovate when there is hundreds of years of tradition?  ;)

Besides, as we are talking about divination, that is, where intuitive perception also plays a good part in delineation, it is the Moon that rules these qualities and not the Sun. Hence the lunar calendar.

I also found out that, when it comes to the months at least, Lorraine Wilcox uses the lunar calendar only and not the mixed calendar. She gives an example for 2001, September 7, Horse hour. She uses the Shen/Monkey month as per the lunar calendar, and not the You/Rooster month as per the solar. This certainly helps. Unfortunately she does not say whether to use the beginning of the year according to the lunar calendar or to the solar one.
