That night, at the Hour of the Rat, the Emperor dreamt that he had walked out of the palace and in the darkness strolled through the garden, under the flowering trees. Something knelt at his feet and asked for asylum. The emperor granted the favor; the supplicant said that he was a dragon and added that the stars had revealed to him that on the next day, before nightfall, Wei Cheng, the Emperor's Minister, would cut off his head. In the dream, the Emperor swore to protect him.

On waking the Emperor asked after Wei Cheng. He was told that Wei Cheng was not in the palace. The Emperor sent for him, and then kept him busy the whole day through, so that the Minister might not kill the dragon; toward nightfall he proposed they play a game of chess. The game was long drawn out: the Minister grew weary, and fell asleep.

A clap of thunder shook the earth. Two captains presently burst upon the scene: they carried the immense head of a dragon drenched in blood. They threw it at the feet of the Emperor and vociferated: "It fell from the sky."
Wei Cheng, who had meanwhile awakened, gazed at the head in perplexity and observed: "How strange. I was dreaming I killed a dragon like that."

    The monk and the student
    ~ Chinese Folktale ~

In one school the teacher was a monk. Most of all he loved to have a snack and a nap afterwards. Every time before the lessons he ate so much that he could barely move.
Soon after the beginning of the lessons he always took a nap and slept until the bell for the end of the lessons sounded.

The son of a poor villager was a student in the same school. His name was Lee. One time Lee asked the monk:
    - Teacher, may I ask you why do you sleep in all our lessons?
    - My friend – replied the monk without any embarrassment. - It just seems that way. During these minutes I meet with Buddha and listen to His wise words. That's why I try to sleep as much as I can.

One time Lee took care of his sick father during the night and fell asleep at school in the morning. He slept so deeply that he didn't hear the bell, which woke the monk.

When the monk saw the sleeping boy, he got very angry, took Lee by the ear and started screaming:
    - Ah, you, little weasel! How dare you fall asleep in my class?
    - Teacher – said Lee – It just seemed that I slept. I was with Buddha and listened to His wise words.
    - And what did the all-powerful Buddha said to you?
    - The all-powerful Buddha told me:” Never in my life have I seen your teacher”.

There once was an officer who during a battle fought in the first ranks with the utmost courage, but the enemies were so strong that he was on the point of succumbing when suddenly an unknown person came to his assistance and turned the impending defeat into victory. After the battle the officer prostrated himself before his savior to thank him for his help, and asked him: "Who are you, venerable god, to whose kindness I owe my life?" "I am the target-god," said the other, "and came here to save you."

"What has your humble servant done to be worthy of your mercy, that Your Divine Majesty should take the trouble to come to his rescue?" said the officer. The target-god replied: '"I wished to show you my thankfulness for the kind consideration you always had for me when you were at target-practice, for not one of your arrows ever hit or wounded me." (From ‘Chinese Wit and Humor’ by Alfred Forke)
